The Art brut 2022 exhibition in Bratislava is the culmination of these more than 15 years of continuous activities. After the 2013 Art Brut exhibition in Slovakia, this is the second, larger project of its kind in the Slovak context. The goal of the exhibition project is to present this creation from various sources - especially from the environment of civic associations helping people to overcome a life crisis caused by a psychological disorder. The goal of the exhibition is also to highlight the importance of art therapy as a means of psychological treatment and rehabilitation that helps people recover from psychological stress and trauma. Each of the authors represented in the catalog and at the exhibition is a unique personality with his own individual handwriting, each of them has a different education, a different social origin, a different cultural and economic background.
The points of contact of their work are individuality, authenticity and formal and content originality. These characteristics are typical of the art that in 1945 the French painter and theoretician Jean Dubuffet identified as art brut. The world-famous Czech critic and art theorist Karel Teige translated this term as art in its raw state. Works representing this creation are mostly created by untrained authors who freely express their feelings and emotions regardless of artistic rules and fashion trends. This exhibition in the Slovak Radio Gallery is part of a wider project intended for professionals and the general public. It is connected with a conference with contributions by renowned experts from various fields, creative workshops and literary, film and theater productions. We believe that the exhibition and other events will contribute to a higher awareness of mental disorders and help to develop professional, but especially social discussion.
